My Top 5 Five Bands

Laura Walkerdine – senior designer – shares her top five bands with five in the name...

Jackson Five: Started 50 years ago and yet I still defy anyone not to tap their foot when they hear ‘I Want You Back’. Plus, Michael was so cute. I wonder what happened to him when he grew up?

Ben Folds Five: Despite the name, there were only actually three members in the band. Best (and let’s face it probably only) known for the mid 90’s anthems of ‘Underground’ and ‘Battle of who could care less’.

5ive: Yes the ultimate bad boy British boyband of the late 90’s. Famed for mixing incredibly catchy choruses with dire rap courtesy of Abz and J (those names could only appear in a boy band). It all went a bit belly up in 2001 when they became a band of four but still had to perform under name of 5ive. The uk shrugged their shoulders and moved onto Blue instead (see future top five on bands named after colours).

B52’s: I’m 17, I manage to sneak into an over 21’s club – and the first song I hear is ‘Love Shack’ – It becomes a sixth form anthem 20 years after its initial release. Just this song is enough to keep them in my top five.

Maroon 5: Highly squeaky, incredible catchy and somehow still releasing records 14 years after their first single. They deserve to be in this list purely for the amount of records they have sold and no other reason at all.

Bands that didn’t quite make the cut: MC5, Five Star, Jurassic 5
